"This is not English."
A familiar reflection that limits our understanding of a global language.
When the teacher’s understanding plateaus, learners often do too.
Conventional teacher training and mainstream course materials frequently reproduce inherited grammatical categories, vague rules, and teacher-centred practices without adequately examining how English actually operates or how adults acquire greater autonomy.
The Learner's Trap
Asking verdict-seeking questions such as: "What's the correct way of saying this?"
In formal settings, learners are trained to expect a final answer instead of being guided to notice the underlying system. This passive dependence is one reason they remain stuck.
The Teacher's Trap
Spoon-feeding "the answer" too quickly — or correcting mistakes before diagnosing the root of the problem.
A teacher's gravest errors are giving the verdict immediately, correcting without investigation, and using explanations that sound authoritative but don't actually help the learner acquire the language.
Responses That Damage Progress
When a learner asks for a verdict, a less experienced teacher may respond
in ways that reinforce the plateau:
"The correct answer is…"
— shuts down inquiry.
"That's a collocation."
— uses teacher jargon without giving real insight.
"That's just how we say it."
— brushes the issue aside and kills curiosity.
"Most native speakers don't say it that way."
— vague, discouraging and unhelpful.
"You just have to memorise it."
— promotes rote learning without a cognitive anchor.
"We need this tense/form here."
— smuggles in authority without explaining the communicative function.
"You learned this already."
— confuses previous exposure with real acquisition.
"Perfect. Exactly. Good."
— rewards recognition without checking whether understanding has taken place.
"English is strange."
— hides the deeper semantic and morphological patterns.
"We have to move on."
— ignores confusion because the lesson plan has priority.

Reduce confusion caused by oversimplified ELT terminology
Provide highly adaptable material to multiple teaching methods

Weed out unnecessary, over-theoretical, or vague explanations
Insider English helps aspiring, novice, and experienced educators examine two areas conventional training frequently leaves insufficiently explored:
- how adult language learning is organised;
- how English itself is analysed and conveyed.
Through cognitive and linguistic inquiry, practical facilitation strategies, and professional exchange, you’ll reassess familiar habits, recognise teacher traps, and develop more meaningful, neuro-friendly approaches to adult English learning.
Whether your background includes TEFL, TESOL, CELTA, DELTA, or other English-language teacher training, the programme invites you to investigate what may have remained outside the scope of your previous preparation.
